Access to HE or Foundation Year for Social Work?

Access to HE and a foundation year can both help adult learners prepare for university study, but they are different routes. The right choice depends on the social work degree you want to apply for, your current qualifications, where you are willing to study and the entry rules for that course.
An Access to HE Diploma is a standalone Level 3 qualification taken before university. A foundation year is usually year 0 of a degree at a particular university or provider. Neither route guarantees a place on a social work degree, so check the current requirements for every course you are considering.

When an Access to HE Diploma may suit you
An Access to HE route may suit learners who want to build a Level 3 qualification before applying to more than one university, or who need a flexible route into higher education. It can also suit people who have identified social work as their goal but still want to compare locations and universities during their preparation year.
It is important not to assume every social work degree has the same requirements. Before enrolling, check the degree page for the formal Access qualification it accepts, the grade profile or Tariff points required, any GCSE or equivalent conditions, and whether relevant experience, an interview, DBS checks or occupational health processes apply. When a foundation year may suit you
A foundation year may suit learners who have found a particular university and degree they want to join, and who meet that provider's entry requirements for the foundation-year route. It can offer a structured transition into that provider's degree, but it is not a general qualification that automatically transfers to other universities.
Read the university's progression wording carefully. A foundation year can have attendance, assessment, grade, professional suitability or other conditions before a student progresses to the social work degree. Course structures also vary: for example, the University of Derby's Social Work (Applied) degree with foundation year and London Metropolitan University's Social Work including Foundation Year set out their own course and entry information. - Which approved qualifying social work degrees am I realistically considering?
- Does each degree accept my proposed Access to HE Diploma, including its title, subjects and grade profile?
- Do I meet the required Level 2 English and Maths qualifications, and are any equivalents accepted?
- Does the degree ask for relevant paid, voluntary or caring experience, and how should I evidence it?
- If considering a foundation year, what are the precise progression conditions into the social work degree?
- What are the study, travel, placement and financial implications of each route for me?
- Is the eventual qualifying social work course approved by Social Work England?
Both routes are preparation, not professional registration
Access to HE and a foundation year are preparatory routes. Neither one is itself a qualifying social work programme or makes someone eligible for registration.
