Choosing a Paramedic Science University and Course

Choosing a Paramedic Science degree is about more than finding a course near home. Compare the published information for the exact university course and entry year: the professional approval, placement pattern, teaching style, travel, support and the practical fit with your life. Check that the programme is an approved route to registration
Academy Online Learning's Access to HE Diploma is academic preparation for university. It is not a Paramedic Science degree, does not include professional paramedic placements and does not qualify you to practise as a paramedic.
To use the protected title paramedic, you must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Check that your chosen qualifying programme appears in the HCPC list of approved paramedic programmes, then confirm the course title, campus and intake on the university's own page. Compare the course experience, not only the prospectus headline

Published material should give you a useful first comparison. Do not treat a course's usual pattern as a promise for every placement or every student: providers and practice partners may need to change arrangements.
Visit, observe and test the practical fit
Open days, campus tours and virtual events are a chance to see the teaching environment and ask how the course is organised. If you can, plan the journey at a time that reflects an early placement start or a late return. Look beyond the main campus: a course can be local while some placement sites are not.
Use the event to compare what is published with what current staff and students describe. Ask about the support available if travel, a placement allocation, disability, caring responsibilities or a difficult assessment affects your ability to participate. Individual circumstances may be handled differently, so make decisions from the provider's current information rather than an informal assurance.
Plan the costs without assuming funding
University funding is separate from the cost of an Access to HE Diploma. For eligible students on eligible pre-registration degree courses in England, the NHS Learning Support Fund may be relevant at the university stage. It does not fund Academy Online Learning's Access course, and eligibility depends on the current rules, your circumstances, the institution and active study. Keep experience in perspective
Experience can help you understand patient-facing work and give you evidence to discuss at selection, but it is not a universal requirement and cannot be substituted for a published academic condition. Ask admissions only when the published answer is missing or unclear
First read the full course page, its entry requirements and any placement or selection guidance. If a material point is not published or is ambiguous, send a short, specific question that names the course, campus and entry year. For example:
- Is this exact campus and intake included in the HCPC-approved programme?
- What is the usual placement area and how are placements allocated for this course?
- Which travel, shift-pattern or placement-cost information should applicants use when planning their budget?
- Which support team should I speak with about a disclosed disability, caring responsibility or access need during placements?
- Where can I find the current information about occupational health, disclosure, driving or fitness-to-practise conditions?
Choose the Access route that matches your university shortlist
Once you have shortlisted degree courses, compare their published subject and credit wording with the two Academy Online Learning routes. Paramedic Science is the main online Access route for adults preparing to apply for a Paramedic Science degree. Paramedic Practice is the alternative route with a higher Health-credit mix. Both lead to the Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health Science Professions), but a university's degree title alone does not tell you which unit mix it accepts.
