Your Next Steps to Become a Paramedic

Becoming a paramedic is a sequence of academic preparation, university or employer-route research, professional training and registration. Academy Online Learning's Access to HE Diploma can prepare you to apply for a degree, but it is not a paramedic qualification and does not include professional paramedic placements.
1. Research the qualifying route
To work as a paramedic in the UK, you need to complete an approved qualifying programme and meet the requirements for HCPC registration. Many learners apply for an HCPC-approved Paramedic Science degree. Another route can be a Level 6 paramedic degree apprenticeship or employed route, where available and where the employer's recruitment requirements are met.
Use the HCPC approved-programmes search and each provider's current course page before making a shortlist. The Skills England paramedic apprenticeship standard explains the apprenticeship route; availability and entry requirements are set by employers and training providers.
2. Compare the entry requirements
Read the exact degree or employer page first. Record the Access qualification it accepts, grade profile, Biology, science or health-credit conditions, GCSE or equivalent requirements, experience expectations, selection process, driving conditions and DBS or occupational-health information. Requirements differ by provider and entry year.
If an intended course accepts Academy Online Learning's route, the formal qualification title to use is Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health Science Professions). The Access to Paramedic Science course online is the main academic preparation route; compare the Paramedic Practice route only against the exact subject-credit wording of your shortlisted courses.
3. Plan your Access study and application
Most Access to HE students apply to university while completing the Diploma for entry in the following academic year. Build your shortlist early, arrange your academic reference in good time, and keep your application evidence accurate. 4. Prepare for selection and professional study
Use work, volunteering, caring and other real experience to develop an informed understanding of the role. Be ready to explain what you learned, not just list activities. If you receive an offer, read its conditions carefully, including grades, checks, placement commitments and any practical arrangements.
5. Recheck practical and financial information
Before accepting a university place, check the current course costs, travel and placement arrangements, student finance and any support for which you may be eligible. Do not assume funding applies from one study stage to another. The university, official funding guidance and your personal circumstances determine what is available.
