Social Work Degree Entry Requirements for Mature Students

Social Work degree entry requirements vary by university, course and entry year. An Access to HE Diploma can be an appropriate Level 3 route for adult learners, but it is not the only condition: universities may also consider your credit profile, English and Maths qualifications, relevant experience and performance in their selection process.
This guide is for people researching a university Social Work degree. It is not a guarantee of admission or a substitute for the exact requirements published for the course and year you want to enter.
What an Access to HE Diploma is
The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) describes the Access to HE Diploma as a qualification that prepares adults without traditional qualifications for higher education. It normally has 60 credits: 45 graded Level 3 credits, awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, and 15 ungraded credits. Confirm that the exact degree accepts an Access to HE Diploma and check whether it specifies a relevant subject area, named units, 45 graded Level 3 credits, or a particular Merit and Distinction profile.
English, Maths and other Level 2 qualifications
Many courses ask for GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4/C or above. A university may accept an equivalent qualification in some circumstances, but Functional Skills acceptance is course-specific and must be checked.
Relevant experience and reflection
Some courses require experience in social care, health, education or another relevant setting. Check both the amount and type of experience required, then be ready to explain what you learned from it.
Selection and suitability
Shortlisted applicants may complete an interview, written task, group activity or another selection process. Offers or enrolment can also be subject to DBS, health and character requirements.

How to read an Access grade profile
A university may set its Access offer as a number of credits at Merit and Distinction rather than an overall grade. For example, 24 Distinctions and 21 Merits make up all 45 graded Level 3 credits. Another university may only specify a minimum number of credits at Merit or Distinction, alongside other conditions.
Some degrees use UCAS Tariff points, some state an Access credit profile, and some use both. Use the Access to HE UCAS points calculator to understand a potential Tariff total, but always check the university’s subject, credit and grade conditions as well.
GCSEs and Functional Skills
Level 2 requirements are separate from an Access to HE Diploma. Social Work courses commonly ask for English and may ask for Maths, a set number of GCSEs, or other qualifications. The published examples above differ, which is why you should record the precise condition for every course on your shortlist.
Functional Skills Level 2 English or Maths may be accepted by some universities as an equivalent, but this is not universal. Do not assume a university-wide policy applies to Social Work, or that a condition for a different entry year applies to yours. Check the exact course page first.
Experience, interviews and selection
Relevant experience can help you understand the realities of Social Work and demonstrate that you can reflect on professional responsibilities. Depending on the university, relevant experience might include paid or voluntary work in social care, health, education, community support or another setting where you work with people. The course page should state whether experience is required, recommended or considered during selection.
Social Work selection can include an interview, written exercise, group activity or a combination of methods. Prepare specific, truthful examples that show communication, empathy, teamwork, resilience, boundaries, safeguarding awareness and reflection. Do not invent experience: selectors may ask follow-up questions about what you did and learned.
DBS, health and character requirements
To qualify as a social worker in England, students must complete an approved Social Work course. Social Work England sets the education and training standards for approved courses, and its approved-course search can help you check a programme.
Because Social Work degrees involve professional practice and placements, universities may require an enhanced DBS check, occupational health information and declarations about health or character before enrolment or placement. Read the university’s fitness-to-practise and suitability guidance carefully. These are degree and placement conditions, not a promise that an Access course alone leads to professional registration.
Applying while you are studying Access to HE
Most Access to HE students apply through UCAS while completing the Diploma for entry in the following academic year. Units that have not yet been moderated are normally entered as pending. A university may ask for the grades achieved so far, details of the units still being studied and an academic reference; any offer may be conditional on the final result.
