About Your Diploma

Orthoptics focuses on eye movement, visual development and how the eyes work together. If you are interested in a career helping children and adults with these aspects of vision, our Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health Science Professions) can help you prepare academically for further study.

The Biology and Chemistry pathway offers a combination of science subjects and study skills for adults who need a Level 3 qualification for university entry. It can be an option if you are returning to education, changing careers or building on experience in a healthcare setting.

University acceptance depends on the individual course. Before enrolling, obtain written confirmation that the diploma title, unit combination, subject credits, required grades and your additional qualifications are suitable for the Orthoptics degree you intend to apply for.

The course includes 12 months of study time. Many students complete their diploma within 8–10 months, depending on their study commitments and assessment progress. Your tutor can help you plan your work towards the moderation cycle needed for your intended university start date.

Preparation for Orthoptics at University

Orthoptists assess and manage problems involving eye alignment, eye movement and binocular vision, which is how the eyes work together. Their patients may have conditions such as a squint or double vision. The profession brings together scientific knowledge, careful observation and communication with people of different ages and needs.

This pathway includes 24 graded Biology credits, 15 graded Chemistry credits and six graded Social Science credits. You will also complete 15 ungraded credits, giving 60 credits in total.

Biology units such as The Structure and Function of Cells and Biochemical Molecules introduce concepts that underpin further biological study. Chemistry for Biologists and Chemistry of Drugs and Medicine broaden your understanding of chemical principles in healthcare. The Social Science units introduce aspects of brain function and behaviour.

Alongside your subject knowledge, you will develop research, referencing and academic writing skills. Learning to evaluate sources, organise evidence and explain scientific ideas will help you prepare for university assignments. Specialist eye examinations, orthoptic assessment and clinical treatment skills are developed through your subsequent professional training.

FAQs

Questions about this course

Q: What does an orthoptist do?
A: An orthoptist specialises in assessing and treating problems with eye movement, eye alignment and how the eyes work together. Orthoptists see children and adults and often work within hospital or community eye care teams.

Q: Can I apply for an Orthoptics degree without A Levels?
A: Yes. Some universities consider a relevant QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma. You must meet the individual degree’s requirements for subjects, credits, grades and additional qualifications. Obtain written confirmation of acceptance before enrolling.

Q: How many Biology and Chemistry credits are included?
A: The pathway contains 24 graded Biology credits and 15 graded Chemistry credits. Six graded Social Science credits and 15 ungraded credits complete the 60-credit diploma.

Q: Will this Access course qualify me as an orthoptist?
A: No. The Access diploma prepares you for higher education. To practise as an orthoptist, you need an appropriate HCPC-approved professional qualification, including clinical training, and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Q: Is Orthoptics the same as Optometry?
A: They are different eye care professions. Orthoptists specialise in eye movement and binocular vision. Optometrists examine eye health and vision and can prescribe glasses or contact lenses. Each profession has its own training and registration route.

Q: Can I study the Access diploma entirely online?
A: Yes. You can study the materials, submit assignments and communicate with your tutor online. The Access diploma has no exams or clinical placement requirement. Professional Orthoptics training includes practical teaching and clinical placements.

Q: Do I need GCSE English and Maths to study Orthoptics?
A: AOLL does not require them to start the Access diploma, but universities set their own entry requirements. These commonly include GCSE English and Maths at specified grades or accepted equivalents. Check any Science requirements and whether Functional Skills are accepted.
