According to a British Nutrition Foundation survey, 62% of Britons have changed their diets recently to get healthier.

The study, which YouGov performed online as part of the BNF’s Healthy Eating Week 2021, examines the dietary and lifestyle adjustments people have made over the year last of the pandemic.

The survey findings also reveal:

  • 41% of respondents specifically look at labels when purchasing new foods, while 64% of respondents say they check food labels for nutritional information when supermarket shopping
  • 1/3 of respondents (33%) claim to have increased their intake of fruits and vegetables, while 29% say they have been preparing healthier meals, and 32% say they have been drinking more water
  • 57% of people claim to have changed their cooking habits after May 2020. 21% discovered healthier recipes to prepare, and 20%, if possible, adopted healthier cooking techniques like baking in place of grilling and frying
  • Over the past year, 50% of respondents said they have started new activities to stay active. 29% started going for regular walks, and 12% began working out regularly in general
  • Over the past year, 69% of respondents indicate they have planned their meals in advance, most frequently (45%) when they have scheduled their shopping

The British Nutrition Foundation hopes to help people build on these successes during its annual Healthy Eating Week and has 5 daily themes, which are:

  • Know the facts – information, advice and myth busting
  • Make a healthier choice – tips and tools to make better choices
  • Plan for success – ways to plan healthier meals and menus
  • Be the chef – how to cook healthier options, with links to recipes and ideas
  • Keep moving – promoting the importance of being active for health

Elaine Hindal, Chief Executive, British Nutrition Foundation said, “Having a healthy diet is essential for well-being and plays a key role in children’s growth and development. We believe everyone should have access to information that can help them make informed decisions about eating healthily.”
