Why this route works for nursing applicants
Nursing degrees require a suitable Level 3 qualification alongside English and Maths requirements. Access to HE is designed for adult learners who need a university entry route without going back to college full time or taking A Levels.
Our Access to Nursing route focuses on academic writing, research, communication, health science, biology, numeracy and professional skills. These areas help you prepare for nursing degree study and for the kind of evidence universities expect to see when you are planning a UCAS application as an Access to HE student.
You study fully online, with no fixed classes to attend and no exams. Assessment is through written assignments and tutor-marked work, so you can build confidence with the type of academic work used at university.
What you will study
The course includes 60 credits at Level 3: 45 graded credits and 15 ungraded credits. Nursing-relevant areas include healthcare communication, professional behaviours, numeracy in a health context, human biology, physiology, disease, research and academic writing.
The units listed below show the current course structure. They are useful when checking university entry requirements because admissions teams may ask about your Access to HE Diploma title, credit profile, grades and subject content.
How this supports your nursing application
We support learners through one UCAS application cycle. This can include guidance on the application form, feedback on your personal statement, predicted grades and an academic reference if you link your UCAS application to Academy Online Learning.
When you contact universities, use the formal qualification title Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health Science Professions). You can then explain that you are studying it as your Access to Nursing route and share your planned units if the university asks for details.
English, Maths and university requirements
Universities accept this qualification route for nursing entry, but you still need to meet each university's full offer conditions. These normally include nursing degree entry requirements such as the required Access grades and English and Maths at GCSE grade 4/C or an accepted Level 2 equivalent. You can also use our Access to HE UCAS points calculator when comparing grade profiles.
Some nursing degrees may also ask for Science GCSE, specific Access units, work experience, an interview, DBS checks or occupational health checks. Check your chosen universities before applying so you know exactly what they require.
Funding for nursing degrees
When you progress to an eligible nursing degree, you may be able to apply for student finance and the NHS Learning Support Fund. Our guide to funding and financial support for nursing courses explains what to check when planning your route to university.
Is this the right Access to Nursing route for you?
