As of September 2020, all students entering pre-registration midwifery courses are entitled to receive annual funding support ranging from £5,000 to £8,000, which you do not need to pay back. You are also still entitled to access funding for tuition and maintenance loans.
Allied health university students in the UK may be eligible for grants and other financial support through the NHS Learning Support Fund (NHS LSF):
- Training grant: £5,000 per year for new and continuing students
- Parental support payment: £2,000 per year to help with childcare costs
- Specialist subject payment: £1,000 per year for students on degrees that struggle to recruit
- Travel and accommodation costs: Help towards additional costs for clinical placements
- Exceptional hardship fund: Up to £3,000 per year for students who experience unforeseen financial hardship
To qualify for the NHS LSF, you must:
- Be a UK resident
- Study at an English university
- Study a degree that leads to registration as a healthcare professional

Entry requirements for the Access to Higher Education Diploma course

Most universities require GCSE English and Maths in addition to the Access to Higher Education Diploma (or A Levels).
Entry requirements may vary between universities. Always verify that your qualifications will be accepted by your chosen institution before enrolling.
Qualification
QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma
The Access to HE Diploma is a nationally-recognised Level 3 qualification. To use the title “Access to HE”, a course must be recognised under the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) Recognition Scheme.
Academy Online Learning’s Access to HE courses lead to a Diploma awarded through Skills and Education Group Access, a QAA-licensed Access Validating Agency.
The Diploma can support applications to university, but each university sets its own entry requirements. Check that your planned unit combination meets the requirements for your chosen degree before enrolling.

FAQs
Q: Can I use this Access to HE Diploma to apply for a Midwifery degree?
A: Yes. The diploma can support applications to Midwifery and related health courses. It contains 45 graded Level 3 credits: 27 Biology credits, 12 Health credits and six Social Science credits, together with 15 ungraded academic skills credits. You can study online and complete the course in as little as 8–10 months.
Q: Do I need maternity or healthcare experience before starting the Access diploma?
A: No. AOLL does not require previous maternity, healthcare or care experience to begin the diploma. Relevant experience may help students understand communication, teamwork, safeguarding, confidentiality and the realities of supporting families. Experience could come from healthcare, care work, maternity services, children’s services, volunteering or caring responsibilities.
Q: Can I get funding to study the Access to HE Diploma?
A: Many of our students that work for an NHS Trust have had their course paid for by the Trust. Enquire with your HR Manager or Team Manager if you would be eligible.
Q: What is the route to becoming a midwife in the UK?
A: The usual route involves:
1. Completing the required entry qualifications, such as an Access to HE Diploma with AOLL.
2. Completing an NMC-approved Midwifery degree or degree apprenticeship.
3. Successfully completing the academic and practice-learning requirements.
4. Meeting the NMC’s health and character requirements.
5. Applying for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Pre-registration Midwifery programmes usually take at least three years and combine academic study with extensive supervised clinical practice.
Q: Can I become a midwife entirely online?
A: The Access to HE Diploma can be completed entirely online because it is an academic qualification.
However, professional Midwifery training cannot be completed entirely through independent online study. NMC-approved programmes include substantial clinical practice involving direct contact with women, babies and families.
Q: Why does the Midwifery pathway include Biology?
A: Midwives need a detailed understanding of human reproduction, pregnancy, birth, postnatal health and the development of babies. The Biology units introduce reproduction, genetics, hormones, cells, nutrition and human body systems. This provides a scientific foundation for later Midwifery study.
Q: Why does the Midwifery pathway include Health and Social Science?
A: Midwives need to understand more than biological processes. They must communicate clearly, support informed decisions and recognise how psychological and social factors can affect pregnancy, birth and family wellbeing. The Health and Social Science units develop knowledge of communication, behaviour, physiological disorders and the relationship between the brain and behaviour.
Q: Where do midwives work?
A: Midwives may work in:
• Hospital maternity units
• Labour wards
• Midwife-led units
• Birth centres
• Antenatal and postnatal clinics
• Community maternity services
• People’s homes
• Specialist maternity services
• Education, research or public health roles
The working environment may include nights, weekends, bank holidays and on-call responsibilities.
Q: Can men become midwives?
A: Yes. Midwifery is open to people of all genders. Every applicant must complete the same approved education, clinical practice and registration requirements.
Q: Can I achieve the grades required for further study?
A: Yes. All 45 graded Level 3 credits can be awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so different grade profiles are possible.
What is Access to Higher Education?
The Level 3 Diploma is designed to prepare adults for university-level study and can support applications to degree courses. With Academy Online Learning, you can complete this qualification entirely online, making it highly accessible and flexible to fit your schedule. This course is designed for adults without a current Level 3 qualification who want to prepare for university study.
How do I get my certificate?
Academy Online Learning is a Skills and Education Group Access Recognised Centre and is approved to run the Access to Higher Education Diploma. You will aim to complete the diploma by our June moderation for a September University start or the November moderation for the January or following June University start.
