Entry requirements for the Access to Higher Education Diploma course

QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma
The Access to HE Diploma is a nationally-recognised Level 3 qualification. To use the title “Access to HE”, a course must be recognised under the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) Recognition Scheme.
Academy Online Learning’s Access to HE courses lead to a Diploma awarded through Skills and Education Group Access, a QAA-licensed Access Validating Agency.

Q: Can I use this Access to HE Diploma to apply for a Speech and Language Therapy degree?
A: Yes. The diploma can support applications to Speech and Language Therapy and related health courses. It contains 45 graded Level 3 credits: 27 Biology credits, 12 Health credits and six Social Science credits, together with 15 ungraded academic skills credits.
Q: Do I need a previous Biology qualification?
A: No. AOLL does not require a previous Biology qualification to begin the diploma. The learning materials develop Level 3 scientific knowledge progressively. Students should be prepared to learn scientific terminology, interpret evidence and explain biological processes in written assignments.
Q: Do I need Speech Therapy, education or healthcare experience before starting the Access diploma?
A: No. AOLL does not require previous employment or voluntary experience in Speech Therapy, healthcare, education or social care. Relevant experience may help students understand communication, confidentiality, teamwork and professional boundaries. This could come from healthcare, education, early-years settings, social care, community organisations, customer-facing employment, volunteering or caring responsibilities.
Q: What is the route to becoming a registered speech and language therapist in the UK?
A: The usual route involves:
1. Completing the required entry qualifications, such as an Access to HE Diploma with AOLL.
2. Completing an HCPC-approved undergraduate or postgraduate pre-registration Speech and Language Therapy programme or an approved degree apprenticeship in England.
3. Successfully completing the academic, clinical and supervised practice-learning requirements.
4. Applying for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
5. Maintaining professional registration and completing continuing professional development.
The Access diploma provides academic preparation but does not include professional Speech and Language Therapy training.
Q: Do speech and language therapists register with the HCPC or the RCSLT?
A: The Health and Care Professions Council is the statutory regulator. Registration with the HCPC is a legal requirement for anyone practising under the protected titles “speech therapist” or “speech and language therapist” in the UK. The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists is the professional body for the profession. RCSLT membership is separate from statutory HCPC registration.
Q: Does the Access course include Speech and Language Therapy placements?
A: The Access diploma is studied entirely online and assessed through academic assignments. It does not include clinical placements, patient assessments or supervised Speech and Language Therapy practice. Practice-based learning forms part of an approved professional Speech and Language Therapy programme, typically at university.
Q: Can I become a speech and language therapist entirely online?
A: The Access to HE Diploma can be completed entirely online because it is an academic qualification. Professional Speech and Language Therapy training cannot be completed entirely through independent online study. It includes patient-facing learning, supervised clinical placements and assessments of professional competence. The diploma enables you to apply to university to complete the undergraduate degree.
Q: Will I learn to assess or treat speech, language and swallowing difficulties?
A: The Access diploma does not train students to assess communication needs, diagnose disorders, plan therapy or provide clinical treatment. The course introduces relevant subjects including healthcare communication, physiological disorders, the brain, behaviour and human biology. Specialist clinical skills must be taught, supervised and assessed through an approved professional programme, such as an undergraduate degree at university.
Q: Can the Access diploma support a Speech and Language Therapy degree-apprenticeship application?
A: The diploma provides Level 3 study that may support an application for a Speech and Language Therapy degree apprenticeship. These apprenticeships are currently available in England. Degree apprenticeships are employment-based, so applicants must secure a suitable position and meet the employer’s recruitment requirements. The apprenticeship must include an HCPC-approved Speech and Language Therapy qualification to provide eligibility to apply for professional registration.
Q: Does the Speech Therapy pathway include Chemistry or Physics?
A: The standard pathway does not contain graded Chemistry or Physics units. Its 45 graded credits consist of 27 Biology credits, 12 Health credits and six Social Science credits. A: Once you achieve a pass or a merit grade you cannot resubmit, this is termed as 'polishing the grade' and the QAA do not allow resubmissions to gain a higher grade.
