Here at Academy Online Learning we offer you the chance to study Functional Skills in Maths and English, or GCSEs in Maths, English and Human Biology. But what is the difference?
Firstly, you do not require either the Maths and English to start a diploma with Academy Online Learning in Health Science Professions or Business Studies.
Secondly, it is important to point out that you must have at least Maths and English at Level 2 to apply to university in the UK. When enquiring check what the entry requirements are for your chosen university course. GCSEs and the Functional Skills that we offer are Level 2.
Functional Skills and GCSEs are both qualifications that assess an individual’s proficiency in Mathematics and English. However, there are some differences between the two. GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) are academic qualifications that are taught in schools across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. They are graded on a scale of 9 to 1, with 9 being the highest grade 1. GCSEs are designed to provide students with a broad theoretical knowledge base and skill set. Students typically study GCSEs during their school years, with exams taken at the end of their 11th academic year.
Functional Skills, on the other hand, are skills-based qualifications that focus on practical applications of Mathematics and English. They are designed to help individuals develop the skills they need to navigate through their personal and working lives. Functional Skills courses cover topics that can be applied to real-life situations, and they focus on Maths and English. To achieve these qualifications, you will need to pass an exam. Functional Skills courses are more flexible than GCSEs, as they can be tailored to meet the learner’s individual needs.
In terms of level, both Functional Skills and GCSEs are Level 2 qualifications. However, there are differences in the way that they are taught. For example, when you enrol in a Functional Skills English course, you will primarily focus on spelling, grammar, and verbal communication. In contrast, GCSEs require a greater depth of knowledge and understanding.
In summary, GCSEs and Functional Skills are both qualifications that assess an individual’s proficiency in Mathematics and English. However, GCSEs are academic qualifications that provide students with a broad theoretical knowledge base and skill set, while Functional Skills are skills-based qualifications that focus on practical applications of Mathematics and English. Functional Skills courses are more flexible than GCSEs, and they can be tailored to meet the learner’s individual needs.
